The scientific evidence about climate change stems from researchers who have spent their careers studying Earth systems rather than politicians or activists. The recorded data shows a different climate pattern than what many people believe about Earth’s past climate history.

The global temperature records from 1880 show that nineteen out of twenty warmest years have occurred during the last twenty years. The previous decade established itself as the hottest period in human recorded history. The data originates from direct measurements conducted by thousands of weather stations and satellites and ocean buoys spread across the world. The atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration remained at 280 parts per million throughout thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution started in 1750. The current atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration exceeds 420 parts per million which represents the highest levels since the last three million years. Scientists use ice core samples to extract ancient air bubbles which provide exact records of past atmospheric conditions.

The Greenland ice sheet loses 280 billion tons of ice each year while Antarctica loses 150 billion tons annually. The observed changes exceed normal ranges because scientists monitor them through satellite observations and ground-based monitoring systems. The Earth’s oceans have experienced an eight-to-nine-inch rise in sea levels since 1880 while the rate of increase has become more rapid during the past few decades. Rising sea levels cause coastal areas throughout the world to experience more frequent flooding during high tides and storms.

People who use biblical descriptions of natural disasters to prove that such events have always occurred need to understand that biblical times operated under a climate which differed substantially from present-day conditions. The climate during biblical times spanning from 2000 BC to 100 AD showed distinct characteristics which differ from contemporary conditions. The Late Holocene period of Earth’s history brought stable climate conditions that were much more consistent than our present climate situation. The substantial temperature increase since 1950 would have been an entirely new experience for people who lived during ancient times.

The Mediterranean climate which defined biblical times operated with dependable seasonal patterns. The natural world experienced droughts and floods and storms but people could anticipate these events through established patterns. The natural disasters mentioned in biblical texts primarily involved regional occurrences which included regional droughts, river valley floods and storms that affected specific areas. The current climate change situation differs from past events because it creates a worldwide impact which affects the entire planet at once.

The Bible describes natural disasters through scientific understanding of actual events which occurred in the past. Different cultures throughout history have recorded flood narratives which stem from actual catastrophic events such as the Black Sea flood from 5600 BC and major river floods. These disasters brought destruction to specific areas, but they did not represent global climate shifts. The biblical account of Joseph facing seven years of famine probably originated from an actual drought pattern that affected the Nile River basin. Scientific evidence from tree rings and other sources shows that Egypt experienced recurring droughts during ancient times, but these events followed natural patterns rather than human-induced climate system changes.

The Bible describes many disasters through natural events which include volcanic eruptions which produce short-term cooling effects and solar variations and ocean current movements. The Earth experienced brief disturbances which did not result in lasting modifications to its climate system. The main difference between ancient regional disasters and modern global climate change lies in their geographical scope because ancient disasters occurred in specific areas but modern climate change impacts the entire planet at once. The current climate shift differs from previous natural climate patterns because it occurs at a rate of decades instead of taking thousands of years. The current climate changes stem from human activities through fossil fuel combustion which releases massive greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere whereas past climate shifts resulted from solar patterns volcanic activity and ocean circulation patterns.

One common claim is that climate change is a “money grab,” but the actual financial numbers tell a different story. Oil, gas, and coal companies make about five trillion dollars in revenue annually worldwide and have enormous financial incentives to downplay climate change. Global spending on climate research is about five to ten billion dollars per year, roughly 0.1% of what the fossil fuel industry makes. Scientists aren’t getting rich from studying climate change. If climate change were a hoax, the people benefiting financially would be solar panel manufacturers and wind turbine companies, but these industries, while growing, are still dwarfed by traditional energy companies.

Multiple independent lines of evidence support the scientific consensus about climate change because they all demonstrate the same pattern. Scientists have used ice core data to study carbon dioxide levels across hundreds of thousands of years while tree ring data shows temperature and precipitation patterns from the past thousand years and satellite observations monitor current changes and thousands of ocean monitoring stations provide temperature data and geological records demonstrate past climate shifts. Thousands of researchers from diverse institutions who employ different methods have independently confirmed the same scientific findings which cannot be considered a conspiracy.

People can maintain their faith and values while learning about climate change. Religious organizations and their leaders support scientific evidence about climate change because they view environmental protection as a fundamental moral duty. The evidence stands as a fact which we must decide on how to handle it. The climate of biblical times demonstrates that natural disasters have always occurred, but the current worldwide environmental changes exceed all previous human experiences.

This isn’t about politics or money – it’s about physics, chemistry, and biology. And those don’t care about our opinions. The evidence for climate change comes from multiple scientific disciplines and thousands of researchers worldwide. The data is publicly available, peer-reviewed, and continuously updated as new information becomes available. When we look at what the climate was actually like during biblical times compared to the dramatic changes happening today, the difference becomes clear: we’re not just experiencing another cycle of natural disasters, but witnessing a fundamental shift in Earth’s climate system that’s happening faster and on a larger scale than anything in recorded human history.
